IT'S BEEN MADE AND SECONDED TO ADOPT THE AGENDA.
ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR. SAY I THANK YOU.
AND DR. REILLY, WE HAVE SOME ACTION ITEMS HERE.
THE FIRST ITEM ON THE ACTION AGENDA IS THE APPROVAL OF PERSONNEL.
YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DISCUSS THESE PERSONNEL IN CLOSED SESSION THIS EVENING, AND I AM SEEKING YOUR APPROVAL AND RECOMMENDING THE APPOINTMENT OF THESE EMPLOYEES THIS EVENING. BOARD MEMBERS, WHAT YOUR PLEASURE.
WE HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO REVIEW ALL OF THE APPLICATIONS AND LETTERS.
I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE PERSONNEL ITEMS AS PRESENTED.
MOTIONS ARE MADE TO APPROVE THE PERSONNEL ITEMS AS PRESENTED AS THEIR A SECOND O SECOND.
THERE IS A SECOND. ANY DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR.
MR. CHAIRMAN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS AND WITH YOUR ACTION THIS EVENING.
SO AT THIS TIME, I'D LIKE TO ASK MR. MATTHEW MASON TO COME FORWARD.
SO BOARD MEMBERS, FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC WHO MAY BE WATCHING THIS EVENING.
MR. MASON WORKED WITH US SEVERAL YEARS AGO AS THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT GOOCHLAND HIGH SCHOOL.
AND SO HIS FIRST DAY WILL BE JULY 1ST.
AND IT'S MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE HIM TO YOU THIS EVENING.
AND WELCOME, MATTHEW BACK TO OUR GOOCHLAND FAMILY.
SO MR. MASON WILL BE OFFICIALLY INTRODUCED TO THE GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL FACULTY TOMORROW MORNING.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. THAT LOOKS REALLY GOOD ON YOU.
[00:35:03]
THAT IS AWESOME.NEXT UP IS INFORMATION ABOUT TEXTBOOK ADOPTION.
AS BOARD MEMBERS, YOU HAVE IN FRONT OF YOU A RECOMMENDATION TO APPROVE THE PURCHASE OF A TEXTBOOK.
THEY HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE IN OUR CENTRAL OFFICE FOR SOME TIME NOW.
WHAT'S YOUR PLEASURE? MR. CHAIR, I MOVE THAT WE APPROVE THE WORLD LANGUAGE AND SCIENCE INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES AS RECOMMENDED THIS EVENING.
MOTIONS MADE TO APPROVE THE INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES AS PRESENTED.
ANY DISCUSSION? MR. CHAIR? YES.
CAN YOU GIVE US AN IDEA OF HOW MANY FOLKS ENGAGED? I KNOW IT CAN BE LIMITED.
I KNOW THAT WE HAD AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
ARE YOU AWARE OF ANYONE BEYOND THAT, ONE INDIVIDUAL SPECIFIC TO THE WORLD LANGUAGE? MS.. OR TO BOTH TEXTS? SO THE SCIENCE REVIEW IS PART OF THE COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW LAST SPRING, AND WE HAD SEVERAL, I WOULD SAY TWO DOZEN GCP TEAM MEMBERS AS PART OF THE TEXTBOOK COMMITTEE THAT REVIEWED THE SCIENCE MATERIALS LAST SPRING.
WE HAD TWO PUBLIC REVIEWS LAST SPRING FOR THE SCIENCE MATERIALS.
WE HAD ONE PUBLIC REVIEW FOR THE WORLD LANGUAGE MATERIALS EARLIER THIS MONTH.
SO NOT A TON OF ENGAGEMENT FROM OUR COMMUNITY, BUT SOME.
REILLY SAID, TRANSPARENT PROCESS ADVERTISE IN THE NEWSPAPER.
LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOLKS TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK AND ENGAGE.
BUT WE DID NOT GET A LOT OF COMMUNITY REVIEW.
THANK YOU, DOCTOR. YOU'RE WELCOME.
SO ENCOURAGE YOU TO LEAN INTO THIS PROCESS GOING FORWARD.
ABSOLUTELY. BOARD MEMBERS, YOU'VE HEARD THE MOTION, THE SECOND DISCUSSION.
NEXT ITEM ON THE AGENDA IS ONE THAT WE'RE EXCITED TO MOVE FORWARD FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.
THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT DECISION ON BEHALF OF THE SCHOOL DIVISION.
YOU KNOW THAT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW, WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE ENGINEERING ASSOCIATED WITH MAKING IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL AND GOOCHLAND HIGH SCHOOL.
ULTIMATELY, THIS WAS A PART OF THE BOND REFERENDUM PROCESS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE SAFETY AND REDUCE SOME OF THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION THAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED FOR MANY, MANY YEARS IN THAT SPACE.
IN ADDITION TO THE PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS, THERE'S LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS, SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS, AS WELL AS THE LAST PHASE OF THE PROJECT INVOLVING ADDING A TURN LANE THAT WILL ALLOW MOTORISTS TO TURN RIGHT ONTO ROUTE SIX WEST AND TO TURN RIGHT ONTO ROUTE 522 SOUTH.
SO A SIGNIFICANT PROJECT IN OUR SCHOOL DIVISION.
THE POSITIVE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS IS THAT BASED ON THE BIDS THAT WE RECEIVED, THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE APPROXIMATELY $300,000 UNDER BUDGET, WHICH IS GREAT GIVEN SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS THAT WE HAVE HAD REGARDING CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATES.
BOARD MEMBERS, YOU'VE HAD A CHANCE TO REVIEW THE MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO US, AND IT'S THEIR MOTION. MR. CHAIR. YES. I MOVE THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AUTHORIZES THE SUPERINTENDENT TO EXECUTE A CONTRACT FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE PARKING LOT AT GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE ADDITION OF TURN LANES ON BULLDOG WAY TO CROSIER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, LLC FOR $3,150,000.
IS THERE A SECOND? SECOND? EVERYTHING SHE SAID.
SECOND TO EVERYTHING, MRS. HORNE SAID.
ANY DISCUSSION? MR. CHAIRMAN, I NOTICE ON THE FORM THAT THERE'S A MISSPELLING.
I DON'T KNOW WHETHER THAT AFFECTS ANYTHING LEGALITY OR NOT.
TALKING ABOUT BULL. GOD. WELL, GOD.
WAYS TO THE BULLS ALL THE WAY.
I SAW THAT. OF COURSE, IT MIGHT BE ONE AND THE SAME, BUT I DON'T KNOW EITHER.
NO OTHER DISCUSSION? NO, I'M JUST IMPRESSED.
BUT WHAT THAT SAYS IS, IS HOW INTRICATE THIS PROJECT IS.
[00:40:04]
HOW MANY IF YOU LOOK AT NOT ONLY IS THIS A LOCAL COMPANY.WE'VE GOT OUR COUNTY BUILDING PERMIT OFFICE INVOLVED.
VDOT HAS EXTENSIVE WORK THAT'S INVOLVED IN THIS.
TIMMONS. THEY WERE I BELIEVE THERE WAS DEWEY DEWBERRY HAS SOME SAY THERE WAS SOME SOMETHING PULLED FROM DEWBERRY REPORT IT JUST IF YOU LOOK AT ALL THE MANUFACTURERS INVOLVED AND THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY IN SO MANY WAYS, BUT ALSO THE ECONOMY. SO AGAIN, I'M IMPRESSED WITH ALL THE WORK THAT IS DETAILED IN THIS BID.
AND THANK YOU, MISS WHITE, AND YOUR STAFF FOR THE WORK.
WHAT THEY DID TO WE HAD TWO LOCAL COMPANIES THAT WERE VERY ENGAGED IN HOW WE WROTE UP THE BIDS AND THEN THE THREE ADDENDUMS. SO THEY THEY READ THROUGH THOSE 390 SOME PAGES AND THEY SAW A FEW THINGS THAT THEY WOULD THOUGHT NEEDED TO BE CORRECTED.
WE SHOWED YOU A PHASED APPROACH THAT WE'RE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE IN THIS PROJECT.
AND MR. MASON, I'M SORRY, BUT YOU'RE THE FRONT OF YOUR SCHOOL WILL NOT LOOK VERY GOOD THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.
SO BECAUSE WE FRANKLY COULD NOT GET ALL THE PROJECT DONE BEFORE AUGUST 12TH, IT'S EXTENSIVE.
WOW, WOW, WOW. IT'S AGAIN, EXCITING FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS? DISCUSSION? MR. MASON, I KNOW THAT THE FRONT OF THE SCHOOL IS GOING TO LOOK GREAT.
APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT FOR THAT.
SO THANK YOU. LAST ITEM ON THE AGENDA, BOARD MEMBERS IS AN IMPORTANT TOPIC OF CONVERSATION IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND WE HAVE BEEN HAD MANY PUBLIC CONVERSATIONS RELATED TO THIS AND THE EXCITEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH OUR NEW GOOCHLAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS CERTAINLY SOMETHING THAT WE'RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT.
BUT WE ALSO KNOW SOME OF THE CHALLENGES RIGHT NOW WHEN IT COMES TO THE ECONOMIC MARKET.
SO, YOU KNOW, THE LAST TIME WE HAD THIS CONVERSATION PUBLICLY WAS WITH OUR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND WE SHARED MUCH OF THE WORK OUR SCHOOL DIVISION HAS BEEN DOING TO TRY TO REDUCE THE DIFFERENTIAL IN BUDGET BETWEEN WHAT OUR BUDGET IS AND THE CURRENT COST ESTIMATES.
AND SO WE HAVE TASKED OUR TEAM AT STANTEC TO TRULY GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.
I MEAN, AND WE'RE TALKING PEN AND PENCIL AND THEN CREATING A DIGITAL FOOTPRINT.
BUT WE HAVE ASKED THEM TO SEEK ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR COST REDUCTIONS AND MOST NOTABLY A CONSOLIDATION OF THE FOOTPRINT, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME KEEPING THE PROGRAM INTACT AND KEEPING THE FEEL THAT WE WANT IN THAT SPACE INTACT AS WELL.
WE KNOW SOME OF THE SITE CHALLENGES THAT WE HAVE.
AND SO WITH A MORE COMPACT FOOTPRINT, WE'RE OPTIMISTIC THAT WE CAN SAVE SOME DOLLARS IN SITE COSTS.
AND WITH A MORE COMPACT FOOTPRINT, WE CAN MAYBE SAVE SOME DOLLARS IN OVERALL CONSTRUCTION COSTS.
SAVINGS ARE UNKNOWN AT THIS POINT IN TIME, BUT PENDING OUR CONVERSATION THIS EVENING, WE CAN MOVE FORWARD WITH GETTING SOME MORE DETAILED COST ESTIMATES, BUT ONE TO SHARE OUR WORK WITH YOU THIS EVENING, WE HAVE DR.
BILL BRADLEY, WHO'S WITH US FROM STANTEC, WHO WANTS TO SHARE AN UPDATE REGARDING OUR WORK.
THANK YOU, DR. REILLY, AND THANK YOU TO THE BOARD FOR HAVING ME HERE THIS EVENING.
REILLY REPORTED TO ME THAT THE CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE JOINT BOARDS WAS VERY PRODUCTIVE AND THAT THE NET TAKEAWAY WAS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION THESE DAYS.
THE MORE COST EFFECTIVE WITHOUT COMPROMISING.
AND SO THAT WAS THAT WAS THE CHALLENGE THAT DR.
AND REALLY THE QUESTION THAT WE'RE ASKING IS, CAN WE SAVE DOLLARS WITHOUT COMPROMISING? RIGHT. AND SO WHAT ARE THE WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT WE TRY TO HOLD IN PLACE? DON'T REDUCE THE CAPACITY, DON'T REDUCE THE SCOPE, DON'T ELIMINATE ANY PROGRAM AND DON'T COMPROMISE ON QUALITY.
RIGHT. ANYTHING ELSE, KEEP TO THE VISION THAT WAS.
[00:45:01]
THANK YOU. THAT THAT'S A GREAT POINT.AND I'M SORRY THAT I DIDN'T INCLUDE THAT, BUT THANK YOU, MS..
THAT'S IMPORTANT. AND I THINK WE DID THAT.
I THINK WE DID THAT. CAN WE SAVE DOLLARS? HOW DO YOU SAVE DOLLARS? AND DR.
REILLY ADDRESSED SOME OF THOSE.
I'LL JUST REITERATE THEM FOR THE RECORD, REDUCING THE FOOTPRINT OF THE BUILDING.
AND WHEN YOU DO THAT, YOU REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF THE FOUNDATION, WHICH IS EXPENSIVE.
THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART OF A BUILDING ARE THE MOST TEDIOUS, IS GETTING OUT OF THE GROUND.
SO TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU CAN REDUCE THAT FOOTPRINT SO MUCH THE BETTER.
SO HOW MUCH ARE YOU BREAKING? BASICALLY REDUCING THE VOLUME.
SO THAT'S THE FLOOR TO CEILING HEIGHTS.
IF YOU DO THAT, THEN YOU REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SPACE THAT HAS TO BE CONDITIONED, WHICH GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO REDUCE YOUR LOADS, THEREBY REDUCING YOUR MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. SO THAT'S BOTH A FIRST AND A LIFECYCLE COST IMPROVEMENT POTENTIALLY.
AND THEN REALLY THE BIG THING FOR THIS ONE IS REDUCING SITE DISTURBANCE.
SO THOSE WERE KIND OF THE PARAMETERS WITHIN WHICH WE BEGAN.
AND I'LL BEGIN WITH A DIAGRAM, AND YOU MIGHT REMEMBER THE DIAGRAM THAT WE HAD BEFORE.
IT'S A BAR. YOU'RE FAMILIAR WITH THIS KIND OF A ARCHETYPE FOR A SCHOOL, BUT IT'S A SPECIAL BAR.
IT'S AN INWARD FACING BAR WHERE THE KINDS OF NEXT GENERATION SPACES THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THAT ARE PART OF THE VISION THAT ARE PART OF THE PROGRAM, ARE INTERIOR TO THE BUILDING AND ACCESSIBLE TO THE CLASSROOMS. IT'S THE VISIBLE EAST AND WEST, LEFT AND RIGHT, PRIVATE, EXTENDING UP AND DOWN.
AND THEN EVERYTHING TO THE LEFT IS WHAT I WOULD CALL PRIVATE.
AND SO IT'S VERY EASY TO SEPARATE THE TWO FOR AFTER HOURS USE, AS YOU'LL SEE.
IT'S IT'S A TWO STOREY SCHOOL THROUGHOUT.
THERE'S DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE FOR THE GYMNASIUM ON THE RIGHT.
BUSSES, AS YOU'LL SEE IN A SECOND, COME IN FROM THE LEFT.
SORRY. COME IN FROM THE RIGHT, WHICH IS EAST FACING, BY THE WAY.
CAR DROP OFF IN FRONT AND PLAYGROUND SERVICE TO THE SIDE.
SO WE DID A PROOF OF CONCEPT SITE DIAGRAM TO SEE IF EVERYTHING WOULD FIT.
GIVEN THE THE LENGTH OF THIS BUILDING.
RIGHT. WILL THE PARKING FIT? WILL THE BUS IS FIT? WILL THE PLAYGROUNDS FIT THE FIELD THAT YOU NEED, THE PAVED SURFACE AREA? CAN YOU GET A FIRE TRUCK ALL THE WAY AROUND, ETC., ETC..
WHAT YOU'RE ABOUT TO SEE IS NOT AT ALL A FINISHED DESIGN.
IT'S JUST US GOING, JUST THROWING THEM DOWN.
SO DON'T DON'T GET WED TO THIS.
SO AGAIN, DON'T GET WED TO THAT.
BUT THE POINT IS, IS THAT IT WORKS.
SO AGAIN, LOOKING AT THIS, I'M GOING TO SWITCH TO A FLOOR PLAN NEXT.
SO WE'RE GOING TO TURN THIS BUILDING UP AND YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THE GEM ON THE RIGHT.
YOU'RE GOING TO SEE CLASSROOMS FLANKING NORTH AND SOUTH.
SO THIS IS THE FIRST FLOOR PLAN AND I'LL WALK YOU THROUGH IT.
THERE IT IS. SO THIS WOULD BE THE FRONT DOOR.
SO BUS TROUGH DROP OFF IN THE SOUTHEAST CORNER, CAR DROP OFF IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER, AS IT WERE.
COME IN, SECURITY VESTIBULE, ADMINISTRATION COMMANDING A VIEW OF BOTH AND THE ENTRY PLAZA.
THIS WOULD BE THE DINING ROOM SO PUBLIC THE GYMNASIUM IMMEDIATELY ACCESSIBLE FROM THEIR KITCHEN WITH THE SERVERY BEYOND AND THEN EXIT TO PLAYGROUNDS BEYOND.
SO YOU HAVE A VERY STRONG ACCESS RIGHT THROUGH HERE.
LIGHT COMING IN ON EITHER SIDE.
EITHER WAY, YOU CAN THEN CLOSE THIS AFTER HOURS.
[00:50:06]
SO THERE ARE FOUR STAIRS AND I'LL JUST POINT THEM OUT, ONE DOWN HERE ON THE LEFT, ONE IN THE MIDDLE, A THIRD IN THE MIDDLE.FACING THE CAFETERIA SO THAT IF YOU HAD A PERFORMANCE, A PERFORMANCE OF A TEN OR DOZEN KIDS, YOU MIGHT GATHER THERE. THERE ARE TWO DOZEN PARENTS HERE, BROTHERS AND SISTERS HERE.
THE PRE K ADMIN IS IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE REMAINDER OF THE CLASSROOMS. BUT LET ME TAKE A STEP BACK AND SAY THAT ON THIS FLOOR WHAT YOU FIND ARE ALL THE KINDERGARTEN, FIRST GRADE AND PRE-K CLASSROOMS. AND THOSE CLASSROOMS ARE ALL SIZED THE SAME PER VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REGULATIONS, AND EACH ONE OF THEM CONTAINS A SELF CONTAINED BATHROOM.
SO STUDENTS IN THOSE CLASSROOMS USE THOSE BATHROOMS PRIMARILY.
ALL THE PROGRAM IS IS INCLUDED PRE K ADMIN AND PRE K CONFERENCE ROOM.
THESE TWO AREAS IN THE MIDDLE ARE THE LIBRARY SPLIT AS SUCH TO INCLUDE AN UPPER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY AND A PRIMARY SCHOOL LIBRARY.
AND THIS SPACE HERE ALSO DOUBLES AS UNSTRUCTURED WHOLE GROUP COLLABORATION.
THE COUNCILOR SUITE IS CONSOLIDATED HERE IN THE MIDDLE OF SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION ROOMS THROUGHOUT AND THEN LIBRARY SUPPORT, WHICH IS EVERYTHING FROM THE LIBRARIAN'S OFFICE TO STORAGE TO A TV STUDIO WHERE THE STUDENTS DO THEIR GREEN SCREEN, MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS AND SUCH.
THE VERY END IS A IS A MUSIC ROOM AND ONE IDEA AND THIS IS ACTUALLY CREDIT TO YOU.
WE MAINTAIN THIS ACCESS THROUGH HERE ON BOTH SIDES RUNNING EAST WEST ON THE NORTH AND SOUTH SIDE.
SORRY ABOUT THAT. EXIT'S HERE AND YOU'LL VIEW SHEDS HERE.
SO EXIT HERE TO THE PARENT, DROP OFF AND EXIT IN THE BACK TO THE PLAYGROUNDS.
SO WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE? SO THE IDEA HERE IS THAT YOU'VE GOT THESE CLASSROOMS WITH COLLABORATION IN THE MIDDLE AND THEN YOU HAVE ONE, TWO, THREE, KIND OF FOUR SHOEBOXES THAT ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS VOID.
AGAIN, LOOK AT THE FLOOR PLAN.
SO WHAT DOES THAT SPACE LOOK LIKE? THIS WHAT I'M ABOUT TO SHOW YOU IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE, BUT IT GIVES YOU AN IDEA.
RIGHT NOW, WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS NOT THIS WIDE, RIGHT? IT'S NOT THIS WIDE.
AND WHAT YOU HAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS ONE ARE THESE SHOEBOX VOLUMES.
RIGHT. SO IT'S BROKEN UP A LITTLE BIT.
I'VE GOT SOME SOME RENDERINGS THAT I CAN SHOW YOU IN A MINUTE.
BUT THE POINT IS, IS THERE'S A CENTRAL VOLUME THAT KIND OF UNIFIES THE SCHOOL.
THAT WAS WE DID A COUPLE OF ITERATIONS OF THIS AND ONE OF THE SOME OF THE FEEDBACK THAT WE GOT FROM A COUPLE OF MEMBERS OF THE PROJECT ADVOCATES GROUP WAS THAT THEY FELT LIKE IN THE INITIAL SCHEMES WE HAD LOST A CONNECTION, THAT THE SCHOOL HAD KIND OF LOST SOME OF ITS VISION.
SO WE TRIED TO FIND THAT AGAIN.
SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE SECOND FLOOR.
YOU GO UPSTAIRS AND FIND THE FOUR STAIR.
BUT LET'S SAY YOU CAME IN THE FRONT DOOR AND YOU WENT UP THIS THIS LEARNING STAIR.
ALL CLASSROOMS FOR GRADES TWO, THREE, FOUR AND FIVE ARE UPSTAIRS.
THEY'RE SMALLER THAN THE K, PRE, K AND ONE CLASSROOMS BELOW.
AND I'LL SHOW YOU HOW THAT WORKS VIA SECTION IN JUST A SECOND.
THESE X'S THAT YOU SEE ARE OPEN TO BELOW.
SO THIS IS THE GYMNASIUM, RIGHT? THIS IS THE DINING ROOM.
AND ESSENTIALLY WHAT YOU HAVE, AGAIN, LIKE YOU SAW IN THAT LAST PICTURE, IS THIS LARGE VOLUME THAT THAT'S INTERRUPTED BY STAIRS AND THE SHOE BOXES.
RIGHT. AND IN SOME CASES WE'VE ATTACHED THE SHOE BOXES WITH CIRCULATION AND OR BREAKOUT SPACE.
[00:55:05]
SO YOU'VE GOT COLLABORATION SPACE UPSTAIRS WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE MORE LIKELY TO USE IT THAN NECESSARILY THE KINDERGARTEN, PRE-K AND FIRST GRADE CLASSROOMS. THE SECOND, THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS, FIFTH GRADERS ARE GOING TO USE THAT MORE.YOU'VE GOT TOILETS FOR THE STUDENTS UPSTAIRS.
THEY'LL BE TOILETS FOR THE TEACHERS.
STUDENT SERVICES IS LOCATED UPSTAIRS.
AND THESE ARE PREDOMINANTLY OFFICES FOR ITINERANT PROFESSIONALS.
IS THAT CORRECT? DR. REILLY? THERE'LL BE A CONFERENCE ROOM UP THERE, A BATHROOM UP THERE AS WELL, THE ART ROOM ON THE END.
AND THEN YOU SEE THE COLLABORATION IN THIS SHED AND THE LIGHT THAT COMES IN THERE AT THE END.
THE OTHER THING I'LL MENTION IS THAT HOW DO YOU GET LIGHT INTO THIS, THIS WHOLE SPACE? RIGHT? AND THE ANSWER IS THROUGH THE CLEAR STORY, WINDOWS ABOVE, CLEAR STORY OF THOSE WINDOWS THAT ARE.
LET'S LOOK AT THAT. THERE YOU GO.
HERE ARE THE CLEAR STORIES UP HERE.
RIGHT. SO THIS IS THE SAME KIND OF A SITUATION.
BUT YOU SEE THE VOLUME IN HERE IS FULL OF LIGHT.
YEAH. SO I'M GOING TO CUT A SECTION RIGHT HERE.
SO WE'RE GOING TO. YOU'RE GOING TO BE STANDING RIGHT HERE LOOKING BACK THROUGH HERE, AND YOU'LL SEE THE FIRST FLOOR CLASSROOMS BELOW AND YOU'LL SEE THE SECOND FLOOR CLASSROOMS ABOVE. AND YOU'LL SEE THIS THIS SPACE IN FRONT OF YOU.
AND THE POINT I WANT TO MAKE IS THAT THE THE CLASSROOMS ABOVE ARE SMALLER THAN THE CLASSROOMS BELOW.
AND THE HALLWAY FOR THE CLASSROOMS ABOVE IS ON THE TOP OF THE CLASSROOMS BELOW.
YOU SEE THE LARGER PRE-K CLASSROOMS BELOW TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE CLASSROOMS EXCUSE ME ABOVE.
IT'S ON TOP OF THE CLASSROOMS BELOW.
AND HERE'S THAT SHOEBOX STICKING UP IN THAT VOLUME.
ALL RIGHT. LIBRARY, COLLABORATION, ETC., NOW.
SO WE'LL LOOK AT ANOTHER INTERIOR.
THE CAFETERIA SERVERY WHERE IT SAYS EAT BACKWARDS IS BEYOND.
BUT YOU SEE, YOU UNDERSTAND THE ACCESS THROUGH THE THROUGH THEIR.
TO THE LEFT THEN WOULD BE THE ENTREE INTO THE PRE-K, KINDERGARTEN, FIRST GRADE LEVEL.
IF YOU WERE MAYBE WHERE THAT MOM IS WITH HER, WITH HER DAUGHTER THERE, AND THEN YOU TURNED 90 DEGREES TO THE LEFT, YOU WOULD SEE THIS.
YOU LOOK DOWN, THERE'S THE THE ACCESS WITH THE LIGHT BEYOND THE COLLABORATION, BEYOND.
AND THIS IS WHAT I WAS REFERRING TO AS LEARNING STAIR LIGHT.
YEAH. AND THIS IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT AND THE OTHER LIBRARY.
AND HERE'S ONE OF THOSE LITTLE TREE HOUSES UP THERE, RIGHT? THERE YOU GO. THERE IT IS.
AND THE THEY'RE GOING UP TO THE SECOND FLOOR.
THIS WOULD BE THE UPPER L LIBRARY.
SO VERY DIFFERENT, I THINK, FROM WHAT YOU'VE SEEN BEFORE.
CAN I ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS FOR YOU? YES, MA'AM. I DON'T SEE AN EXTERIOR DOOR TO THE KITCHEN.
WELL, WE JUST THIS IS JUST A DIAGRAM.
SO THERE WILL BE AN EXTERIOR IN BOARD MEMBERS.
JUST BEFORE WE JUMP INTO QUESTIONS IN GREAT DETAIL, WE'RE STILL KIND OF EARLY IN THIS PROCESS.
OF COURSE, THAT WAS KIND OF JUST OUR FIRST GLANCE AT THOSE TODAY.
[01:00:03]
WE'LL WORK WITH PRESCHOOL TEACHERS, OUR OPERATIONAL TEAM, TO MAKE SURE IS THIS FUNCTIONAL FOR YOU.SO WE JUST WANTED TO CONCEPTUALLY GET THIS FOR CONVERSATION PURPOSES THIS EVENING.
YOU SAW SOME OF THE RENDERINGS.
THEY'RE JUST RENDERINGS AT THIS POINT IN TIME.
THERE'S NO RAILINGS ON THOSE STAIRS.
IS THE SOLE REASON FOR THE DIFFERENCE IN THE SIZE OF THE UPPER LEVEL CLASSROOMS TO 35 AND THE LOWER LEVEL, THE INCLUSION OF THE BATHROOM? OR IS IT MORE THAN THAT STILL? IT'S ACTUALLY MORE THAN THAT.
THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION REQUIRES THAT THE PRE-K, KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE CLASSROOMS BE AT A MINIMUM 1025 SQUARE FEET, INCLUDING A BATHROOM.
AND SO THAT'S WHAT THOSE ARE SIZE TO BE.
THE CLASSROOMS ABOVE THAT MINIMUM ARE 800.
YEAH. OKAY, GREAT VIDEO DESIGN GUIDELINES.
I'M GOING TO ASK THE QUESTION A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY.
SURE. WHY WOULDN'T YOU MAKE THE UPSTAIRS CLASSROOMS THE 1025 AS WELL, TO LEND YOURSELF FOR FUTURE GROWTH? WHAT ARE WE FORFEITING IF WE DO THAT? JUST MONEY. BUT WE'RE BUILDING ON THE SAME FOOTPRINT.
SO UPSTAIRS AND DOWNSTAIRS, WE WOULD PUSH THE.
I MEAN, YOU WOULD ESSENTIALLY ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE, SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT, NINE, TEN, 11.
LET'S CALL IT 20 CLASSROOM'S TIMES 200 SQUARE FEET.
MR. MASON, WHAT'S THE MATH ON THAT? I'LL THINK ABOUT 20,000.
NO, NO. THERE'S A FOUR IN THERE SOMEWHERE.
THAT MUCH I KNOW? YEAH, IT WAS 20 TONS.
IF THE FOOTPRINT OF THE BUILDING IS REMAINS CONSISTENT.
WELL, I'LL TELL YOU WHAT I'LL SHOW YOU.
THAT'S A FAIR QUESTION. I'M SORRY.
SO ON THE SECOND FLOOR, WE HAVE THESE VOIDS.
YOU'RE NOT PAYING VERY GOOD VOIDS.
THANK YOU. THAT ANSWERS MY QUESTION.
THANK YOU. AND MAYBE COMPARISON OF A CURRENT CLASSROOM.
LIKE, CAN YOU THINK OF A CLASSROOM IN A CURRENT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL? THAT WOULD BE THE SIZE THAT HE'S REFERRING TO FOR THE UPSTAIRS CLASSROOMS? YEAH, IT'S I MEAN, OUR CURRENT BUILDINGS WERE BUILT IN A DIFFERENT TIME, SO IT'S KIND OF HARD TO COMPARE BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL SO MUCH DIFFERENT.
BUT, YOU KNOW, WE FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH THE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT ARE IN THE PROGRAM.
WE'VE MET WITH, OF COURSE, THE PLANNING TEAM AND FEEL THE SQUARE FOOTAGE.
IT'S A SIGN THAT THESE SPACES CERTAINLY GOING TO BE MORE THAN ADEQUATE FOR OUR FUTURE NEEDS.
THANK YOU. I'LL SAY THIS IN ADDITION TO WHAT DR.
SO THAT'S YEAH, I DO LIKE THE FLOW AND I DO SEE WHERE YOU HAVE SOME FLEXIBILITY AND SOME ADAPTABILITY WITH THESE OTHER SPACES FOR THE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LEARNING SETTINGS.
AND YES, WE DO HAVE SOME GOOD SPOTS FOR INTERVENTIONIST DR.
SO SOME INDIVIDUAL LEARNING WITH STUDENTS.
OUR STUDENTS AT GOOGLE ELEMENTARY ARE USED TO GOING DOWNSTAIRS FOR THE SCHOOL NURSE.
WHERE ARE YOU THINKING SCHOOL NURSE, ADMIN AND ADMIN? YEAH, WE TYPICALLY, I THINK THIS IS TYPICAL OF ALL SCHOOL DESIGN.
JUST SPEAKING OF THE GYM, IS IT THE SAME SIZE AS WAS TO BE IN THE OTHER SCHOOL BUILDING? OKAY, GOOD, GOOD.
THEY'RE AVAILABLE FOR PARKS AND RECREATION COMMUNITY USE IN THE EVENINGS.
SO, YEAH, FULL THREE POINT LINE AND EVERYTHING.
THAT AND I LOVE THE CASCADE PLAN.
[01:05:08]
WHEN WE HAD AN EARLY DISCUSSION WAS ALL THE GLASS.AND I SEE THAT IS MISSING IN HERE, BUT YOU HAVE THE GLASS AROUND THE UPPER AREAS FOR LIGHT AND I LIKE THAT PIECE OF IT.
I'M ASSUMING THAT'S A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE THAN THE GLASS WE HAD IN THE OTHER BUILDING.
YES. I MEAN, WHERE YOU PUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY CHANGE THE COST OF THE GLASS PER SE.
BUT NEXT STEPS INCLUDE TWO THINGS.
ONE, WE'RE WORKING ON THE ELEVATIONS, LIKE WHAT IS THE SCHOOL LOOK LIKE? ONE THING THAT WE BELIEVE TO BE THE CASE IS IT'LL BE MADE OUT OF BRICK.
SO IT WILL BE MADE OUT OF BRICK.
SO WE'RE GOING WE'RE WORKING ON THOSE ELEVATIONS NOW.
AT THE SAME TIME, JUST SO YOU KNOW WHAT WE'RE THE SECOND THING IS TO GET A COST ESTIMATE FOR THIS.
RIGHT. AND SO DOWNING'S GOT THE SAME PROFESSIONAL COST ESTIMATE.
AND SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW BILL DOWNING, FORMER FUCK YOUR COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER.
WE'RE GOING TO GET THE SAME LEVEL OF DETAIL COST ESTIMATE THAT WE GOT BEFORE.
SO YOU'LL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO AN APPLES TO APPLES COMPARISON.
THE OTHER SCHEME COST A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY.
THIS'LL COST A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MONEY IN ORDER TO GET THEM THAT COST ESTIMATE.
BESIDES DOING ELEVATIONS, WE'RE TRYING TO GET AS MUCH INFORMATION INTO THE DOCUMENTS AS POSSIBLE.
WE HAVE TO DO THAT BY THIS FRIDAY BECAUSE THEY NEED TWO WEEKS IN ORDER TO DO THAT.
AND WE KNOW YOU NEED TO GET THAT FOR YOUR MEETING ON THE 12TH.
I CAN SEE SOME COST SAVINGS AS WELL IN YOUR HVAC SYSTEMS AND YOUR PLUMBING BECAUSE YOUR RUNS ARE GOING TO BE ON TOP OF EACH OTHER AND VERY STRAIGHT. SO YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF WASTING ON ANGLES AND ALL THE DIFFERENT FITTINGS THAT GO INTO THAT AND THE TIME THAT GOES IN TO DO THOSE FITTINGS.
ALSO GOING TO BE VERY INTERESTED TO SEE, AS YOU DO, THOSE COST ESTIMATE, WHAT OTHER MATERIALS ARE WE COSTING OUT BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE WEREN'T REAL HAPPY WITH FLOOR CHOICES.
SO LOOKING AT WE WANT MATERIAL THAT'S SUSTAINABLE AND ATTRACTIVE.
AND AND WE'LL STAND UP TO 650 ELEMENTARY STUDENTS PUTTING THEIR HANDS ON EVERYTHING.
SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT STEP AND ALL THE WORK THAT'S GOING TO BE DONE IN THAT.
BUT THANK YOU FOR JUST REALLY ACCEPTING AND RECOGNIZING THAT IT IS A HARD PLACE TO BE IN, BUT WE CAN STILL BE EXTREMELY CREATIVE AND WE CAN STILL MEET THE VISION FROM THE COMMITTEE, BUT ALSO THE VISION FROM OUR COMMUNITY THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE AN EXCEPTIONAL LEARNING SPACE.
DR. BRADLEY, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
BOARD MEMBERS, OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? I LIKE IT. I REALLY DO LIKE I LIKE IT.
I THINK I LIKE IT BETTER THAN THE OTHER VERSION, BUT MAYBE THAT'S BECAUSE I'M VERY LINEAR.
YEAH, I'LL RESERVE MY LIKE OR DISLIKE WHEN I SEE THE BID COME BACK.
SO I DO WANT TO GET YOUR TAKE IN.
THIS QUESTION MAY BE PREMATURE.
YOU HEARD EARLIER OUR PARKING LOT PROJECT CAME IN ABOUT 9% UNDER WHAT WE HAD THOUGHT IT WOULD COST.
DOES THAT GIVE YOU SOME ENCOURAGEMENT THAT MAYBE THE INDICATIONS EARLIER THIS YEAR ABOUT THE INFLATION AND MATERIALS AND LABOR MIGHT BE EASING JUST ENOUGH TO HELP WITH SOME COST PRESSURES HERE? ANGELA, YOU'RE ASKED ME TO COMMENT ON SOMETHING.
I REALLY CAN'T. THAT'S MAYBE PREMATURE.
BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW? I THINK BOARD MEMBERS, WHAT WE'VE I BELIEVE WE'VE DONE OUR DUE DILIGENCE TO LOOK AT MANY, MANY OPTIONS TO TRY TO REDUCE THE COSTS OF THIS PROJECT.
WE'VE LOOKED AT EVERYTHING FROM A NEW SITE TO RENOVATION TO BUILDING ON THE CURRENT SITE.
WE'VE OBVIOUSLY CHANGED THE OVERALL DESIGN.
WE JUST WENT A DIFFERENT DIRECTION AND MY TASK TO STANTEC IS TO VALUE ENGINEER THIS AS WE GO.
LET'S NOT GET A PRICE AND THEN COME BACK AND VALUE ENGINEER.
AND IF WE SLOW DOWN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW, OPENING IN AUGUST OF 2024 IS IN JEOPARDY.
[01:10:06]
AND SO IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE CONTINUE THIS MOMENTUM AND THAT WE DON'T SLOW DOWN BECAUSE WE CERTAINLY ADVERTISE THIS AS IN AUGUST OF 2024 OPENING.SO WITHOUT ANY OBJECTION THIS EVENING, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO DO OUR WORK WITH STANTEC.
YOU HEARD THEIR DEADLINE TO GET THIS IN FRONT OF DOWNIE AND SCOTT.
MY GOAL IS TO PRESENT TO YOU THAT COST ESTIMATE ON THE 11TH OF APRIL PRIOR TO YOUR WORK SESSION WITH THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS ON THE 12TH.
AND THEN I'M OPTIMISTIC THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE DETAILED DESIGN AND PREPARE BID DOCUMENTS AND GET THIS PROJECT OUT TO BID BECAUSE IF WE DELAY, WE COULD BE OPENING BEYOND AUGUST OF 2024.
SO I APPRECIATE YOUR FEEDBACK THIS EVENING.
SO, BOARD MEMBERS, THAT BRINGS US TO THE END OF TONIGHT'S AGENDA.
MR. CHAIR, I MOVE THAT WE ADJOURN.
MOTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO ADJOURN THE MEETING.
THERE IS A SECOND IN THE DISCUSSION.
THANKS VERY MUCH.
