MR. MASON WORKED WITH US SEVERAL YEARS AGO AS THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT GOOCHLAND HIGH SCHOOL.

HE HAS BEEN SERVING FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS AS THE PRINCIPAL AT SANDUSKY MIDDLE SCHOOL AND FRED IN LYNCHBURG CITY.

AND SO WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE HIM RETURNING TO OUR COMMUNITY TO BE A PART OF OUR GOOCHLAND FAMILY.

AND SO HIS FIRST DAY WILL BE JULY 1ST.

AND IT'S MY PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE HIM TO YOU THIS EVENING.

AND WELCOME, MATTHEW BACK TO OUR GOOCHLAND FAMILY.

WE HAD TWO PUBLIC REVIEWS LAST SPRING FOR THE SCIENCE MATERIALS.

WE HAD ONE PUBLIC REVIEW FOR THE WORLD LANGUAGE MATERIALS EARLIER THIS MONTH.

SO NOT A TON OF ENGAGEMENT FROM OUR COMMUNITY, BUT SOME.

AND AGAIN, AS DR.

REILLY SAID, TRANSPARENT PROCESS ADVERTISE IN THE NEWSPAPER.

LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR FOLKS TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK AND ENGAGE.

BUT WE DID NOT GET A LOT OF COMMUNITY REVIEW.

NEXT ITEM ON THE AGENDA IS ONE THAT WE'RE EXCITED TO MOVE FORWARD FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION.

THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT DECISION ON BEHALF OF THE SCHOOL DIVISION.

YOU KNOW THAT FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW, WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE ENGINEERING ASSOCIATED WITH MAKING IMPROVEMENTS TO THE PARKING LOT IN FRONT OF GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL AND GOOCHLAND HIGH SCHOOL.

ULTIMATELY, THIS WAS A PART OF THE BOND REFERENDUM PROCESS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE SAFETY AND REDUCE SOME OF THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION THAT WE HAVE EXPERIENCED FOR MANY, MANY YEARS IN THAT SPACE.

IN ADDITION TO THE PARKING LOT IMPROVEMENTS, THERE'S LIGHTING IMPROVEMENTS, SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS, AS WELL AS THE LAST PHASE OF THE PROJECT INVOLVING ADDING A TURN LANE THAT WILL ALLOW MOTORISTS TO TURN RIGHT ONTO ROUTE SIX WEST AND TO TURN RIGHT ONTO ROUTE 522 SOUTH.

SO A SIGNIFICANT PROJECT IN OUR SCHOOL DIVISION.

THE POSITIVE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS IS THAT BASED ON THE BIDS THAT WE RECEIVED, THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BE APPROXIMATELY $300,000 UNDER BUDGET, WHICH IS GREAT GIVEN SOME OF THE CONVERSATIONS THAT WE HAVE HAD REGARDING CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATES.

SO WE ARE SEEKING YOUR APPROVAL OF THIS CONTRACT, GIVING ME THE AUTHORITY TO SIGN THIS ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD.

BOARD MEMBERS, YOU'VE HAD A CHANCE TO REVIEW THE MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO US, AND IT'S THEIR MOTION. MR. CHAIR. YES. I MOVE THAT THE SCHOOL BOARD AUTHORIZES THE SUPERINTENDENT TO EXECUTE A CONTRACT FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE PARKING LOT AT GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE ADDITION OF TURN LANES ON BULLDOG WAY TO CROSIER CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, LLC FOR $3,150,000.

THEY WERE I BELIEVE THERE WAS DEWEY DEWBERRY HAS SOME SAY THERE WAS SOME SOMETHING PULLED FROM DEWBERRY REPORT IT JUST IF YOU LOOK AT ALL THE MANUFACTURERS INVOLVED AND THIS PROJECT IS GOING TO BENEFIT OUR COMMUNITY IN SO MANY WAYS, BUT ALSO THE ECONOMY. SO AGAIN, I'M IMPRESSED WITH ALL THE WORK THAT IS DETAILED IN THIS BID.

AND THANK YOU, MISS WHITE, AND YOUR STAFF FOR THE WORK.

WHAT THEY DID TO WE HAD TWO LOCAL COMPANIES THAT WERE VERY ENGAGED IN HOW WE WROTE UP THE BIDS AND THEN THE THREE ADDENDUMS. SO THEY THEY READ THROUGH THOSE 390 SOME PAGES AND THEY SAW A FEW THINGS THAT THEY WOULD THOUGHT NEEDED TO BE CORRECTED.

WE SHOWED YOU A PHASED APPROACH THAT WE'RE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE IN THIS PROJECT.

AND MR. MASON, I'M SORRY, BUT YOU'RE THE FRONT OF YOUR SCHOOL WILL NOT LOOK VERY GOOD THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.

SO BECAUSE WE FRANKLY COULD NOT GET ALL THE PROJECT DONE BEFORE AUGUST 12TH, IT'S EXTENSIVE.

IT'S A VERY BIG PROJECT.

WOW, WOW, WOW. IT'S AGAIN, EXCITING FOR OUR COMMUNITY.

BUT WE ALSO KNOW SOME OF THE CHALLENGES RIGHT NOW WHEN IT COMES TO THE ECONOMIC MARKET.

SO, YOU KNOW, THE LAST TIME WE HAD THIS CONVERSATION PUBLICLY WAS WITH OUR BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND WE SHARED MUCH OF THE WORK OUR SCHOOL DIVISION HAS BEEN DOING TO TRY TO REDUCE THE DIFFERENTIAL IN BUDGET BETWEEN WHAT OUR BUDGET IS AND THE CURRENT COST ESTIMATES.

AND SO WE HAVE TASKED OUR TEAM AT STANTEC TO TRULY GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD.

I MEAN, AND WE'RE TALKING PEN AND PENCIL AND THEN CREATING A DIGITAL FOOTPRINT.

BUT WE HAVE ASKED THEM TO SEEK ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR COST REDUCTIONS AND MOST NOTABLY A CONSOLIDATION OF THE FOOTPRINT, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME KEEPING THE PROGRAM INTACT AND KEEPING THE FEEL THAT WE WANT IN THAT SPACE INTACT AS WELL.

WE KNOW SOME OF THE SITE CHALLENGES THAT WE HAVE.

AND SO WITH A MORE COMPACT FOOTPRINT, WE'RE OPTIMISTIC THAT WE CAN SAVE SOME DOLLARS IN SITE COSTS.

AND WITH A MORE COMPACT FOOTPRINT, WE CAN MAYBE SAVE SOME DOLLARS IN OVERALL CONSTRUCTION COSTS.

SAVINGS ARE UNKNOWN AT THIS POINT IN TIME, BUT PENDING OUR CONVERSATION THIS EVENING, WE CAN MOVE FORWARD WITH GETTING SOME MORE DETAILED COST ESTIMATES, BUT ONE TO SHARE OUR WORK WITH YOU THIS EVENING, WE HAVE DR.

BILL BRADLEY, WHO'S WITH US FROM STANTEC, WHO WANTS TO SHARE AN UPDATE REGARDING OUR WORK.

AND REALLY THE QUESTION THAT WE'RE ASKING IS, CAN WE SAVE DOLLARS WITHOUT COMPROMISING? RIGHT. AND SO WHAT ARE THE WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT WE TRY TO HOLD IN PLACE? DON'T REDUCE THE CAPACITY, DON'T REDUCE THE SCOPE, DON'T ELIMINATE ANY PROGRAM AND DON'T COMPROMISE ON QUALITY.

RIGHT. ANYTHING ELSE, KEEP TO THE VISION THAT WAS.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE PART OF A BUILDING ARE THE MOST TEDIOUS, IS GETTING OUT OF THE GROUND.

SO TO THE EXTENT THAT YOU CAN REDUCE THAT FOOTPRINT SO MUCH THE BETTER.

THAT ALSO THEREBY REDUCES THE AMOUNT OF ROOF AND CAN ALSO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF EXTERIOR SURFACE AREA.

SO HOW MUCH ARE YOU BREAKING? BASICALLY REDUCING THE VOLUME.

SO THAT'S THE FLOOR TO CEILING HEIGHTS.

IF YOU DO THAT, THEN YOU REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF SPACE THAT HAS TO BE CONDITIONED, WHICH GIVES YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO REDUCE YOUR LOADS, THEREBY REDUCING YOUR MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT. SO THAT'S BOTH A FIRST AND A LIFECYCLE COST IMPROVEMENT POTENTIALLY.

AND THEN REALLY THE BIG THING FOR THIS ONE IS REDUCING SITE DISTURBANCE.

GIVEN THE COMPLICATIONS ON THE SITE, THE LESS WE TOUCH THE BETTER AND ALSO SPEAKS TO VISION AND PRESERVING NATURE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

SO THOSE WERE KIND OF THE PARAMETERS WITHIN WHICH WE BEGAN.

AND I'LL BEGIN WITH A DIAGRAM, AND YOU MIGHT REMEMBER THE DIAGRAM THAT WE HAD BEFORE.
