STANDS FOR EXCELLENCE, COURAGE, MEMBERS TO RECOGNIZE THOSE WHO TRULY EXEMPLIFY ONE OR MORE OF THESE VALUES IN THEIR DAILY ACTIONS. THIS QUARTER, WE RECEIVED OVER 50 NOMINATIONS AND AFTER THOUGHTFUL CONSIDERATION, WE HAVE CHOSEN THE GROUP THAT WILL BE RECOGNIZED TONIGHT. WE DO WANT TO DO A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO MR. J. BROCKMAN AND MISS ALEXANDRIA AND ANNALEE'S GREECE, WHO MADE THE ECCHO AWARDS FOR US AND REDESIGNED US. THIS IS MADE BY OUR STUDENTS IN OUR CTE PROGRAM. WE ARE GOING TO GET STARTED WITH OUR STUDENTS.

MR. JERRY FRY. JERRY FRY IS A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR. HE WAS NOMINATED BY MR. JASON FUNKHOUSER, WHO IS A TEACHER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL BUT MR. FUNKHOUSER NOMINATED JERRY AS A PARENT. HE SAID JERRY FRY IS STUDENT AT GHS LIFE HAD THE

PRIVILEGE OF COACHING FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS. WHILE I'VE SEEN HIS MANY ADMIRABLE QUALITIES AS A COACH, I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE HIM FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A PARENT. I FIRST MET JERRY IN EIGHTH GRADE WHEN HE PLAYED SOCCER AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. MY SON WAS A SIXTH GRADER ON THE TEAM AND JERRY IMMEDIATELY STOOD UP FOR HIS KINDNESS AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

RATHER THAN LOOKING DOWN ON YOUNGER PLAYERS, HE WILL COME TO THEM AND LIFTED THEM UP, MAKING A LEFTY -- LASTING IMPACT ON MY SON'S EXPERIENCE. THAT LEADERSHIP CONTINUES TODAY AS ONE OF THE MARINE CORPS JROTC LEADERS, JERRY IT'S MY OLDEST SON, NOW IN EIGHTH GRADER AT 7:00 A.M. WHICH IS EARLY FOR TEENAGERS WITH THE SAME POSITIVITY AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

HIS PRESENCE HAS MOTIVATED MY SON TO PUSH HIMSELF IN WAYS I NEVER EXPECTED. SIMPLY BECAUSE JERRY MAKES THEM FEEL INCLUDED AND INSPIRED. BOTH OF MY CHILDREN HAVE BENEFITED FROM JERRY'S EXAMPLE OF LEADERSHIP, KINDNESS, AND INCLUSIVITY. HE IS A TRUE ROLE MODEL AND IS FULLY DESERVING OF THE ECCHO AWARD. I AM PROUD TO NOMINATE HIM FOR THIS RECOGNITION.

THESE STUDENTS WERE NOMINATED BY LIZ QUEENER, THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, AND THEY WERE NOMINATED FOR EXCELLENCE. ABBY AND ASHBY IMMEDIATELY JUMPED INTO ACTION TO HELP THEIR FRIEND EXPERIENCING A MEDICAL EMERGENCY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. THEY WERE CALM AND COLLECTED UNDER PRESSURE AND KNEW EXACTLY WHAT STEPS TO TAKE TO ENSURE THEIR FRIEND RECEIVED HELP IMMEDIATELY. THEY SIT WITH THEIR FRIEND THROUGHOUT THE EVENT AND KEPT THEM, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THEY WERE SCARED THEMSELVES.

THEY EVEN KNEW HOW TO REALLY ALL THAT IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFORMATION TO PARAMEDICS WHEN THEY ARRIVED. I AM SO IMPRESSED WITH THEIR RESPONSE AND CARE FOR THEIR FRIEND. OUR TEAM IS BEYOND THANKFUL TO THEM. CONGRATULATIONS, ASHBY.

HER ATTENTION TO DETAIL, PERSEVERANCE WITH TOUGH, PHYSICAL TASKS, AND WILLINGNESS TO DO WHATEVER WAS NEEDED, FROM POWER WASHING TO PLANTING, SHOWCASE HER EXCELLENCE NOT ONLY IN THE QUALITY OF THE FINISHED COURTYARD, BUT ALSO THE SPIRIT OF SERVICE SHE BRINGS TO OUR SCHOOL. SHE EXEMPLIFIES EXCELLENCE BY SETTING A HIGH STANDARD OF CARE, COMMUNITY PRIDE, AND GENEROSITY. HER WORK HAS INCLUDED WASHING THE ENTIRE COURTYARD, HAULING TRASH, PLANTING, PAINTING, WATERING, AND EVEN MOVING HEAVY FURNITURE ALONE. SHE HAS PICKED UP PLANTS, SPRAYED FOR BUGS, AND TAKING CARE OF EVERY DETAIL TO ENSURE THIS SPACE THRIVES. SHE HAS BEEN INTEGRAL IN HELPING THE SIXTH GRADE TEAM DEVELOP CONSISTENT EXPECTATIONS, POSITIVE BUY-IN FROM ALL AND PLANNING WHEN NEEDED. MOST RECENTLY, MOLLY HAS PLANNED AN INTERACTIVE CSI, CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION ABOUT THE BOSTON MASSACRE THAT ENCOURAGED STUDENTS TO BE INVOLVED IN THEIR OWN LEARNING IN A UNIQUE WAY TO TEACH HER STUDENTS ABOUT BISON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY STUDENTS. -- SOURCES.

CRYSTAL HAS COME TO GCPS WITH A TRUE WILLINGNESS TO TACKLE HEART PROJECTS. IN HER FIRST MONTHS HERE, SHE WAS ABLE TO PUT A NEW FACE TO THE TV MEDIA PROGRAM, AMAZED GUEST SPEAKERS AND RELAUNCH THE SCHOOL NEWS PROGRAM ALONG WITH SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS

AND PEER INTERVIEWS. SHE IS REBUILDING AND REBRANDING WITH VIGOR. WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE HER. CONGRATULATIONS. AND NEXT, MARY PAGE DAVID AND OLIVIA. OLIVIA IS ONE OF OUR SPANISH TEACHERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL. THEY WERE NOMINATED BY ONE OF OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS, CHRIS KING. THEY HAVE BEEN LEAVING THE CHURCH TO ENSURE ALL CULTURES ARE APPROPRIATELY CELEBRATED DURING HISPANIC EACH MONTH. THEY HAVE COLLABORATED WITH OTHER PROFESSIONALS AROUND THE BUILDING. STUDENTS, PARENTS, AND ADMINISTRATION, TO EXECUTE A MEANINGFUL CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC CULTURE THAT DOUBLES AS AN AUTHENTIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. JUST SO YOU ALL KNOW, I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SAMPLING ENCHILADAS AND GUACAMOLE THAT SOME OF OUR STUDENTS MADE WITH COLLABORATION WITH STUDENT SERVICES STAFF AS DID DR. ARMSTRONG. FROM A PURELY NUMBERS PERSPECTIVE, THE DATA LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. IMPROVEMENT IN ONE MEASURE AND MAINTENANCE PERCENTAGE IN THE OTHER TWO. YET, WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT THE PERCENTAGE MEANS, IF I HAVE THE NUMBERS RIGHT, ACCORDING TO THE INTERNET, WE HAVE 2500 STUDENTS, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. WELL, THAT MEANS 400. AT LEAST 40% OF THE STUDENTS DON'T FEEL LIKE THEY ARE INVOLVED. AND A SENSE OF BELONGING IS TIED TO A SENSE OF EMOTIONAL SAFETY, TO A SENSE OF BEING HEARD, SEEN, AND VALUED WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT. I'M CURIOUS HOW YOU WILL DIG INTO THIS DATA. TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT'S KEEPING SO MANY STUDENTS FROM FEELING A SENSE OF TALKING. WE ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS WITH STUDENTS? PARENTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, STAFF. I ALSO WONDER IF THERE IS A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DATA AND THE DISPARITY IN PERFORMANCE SEEN WHEN DATA IS BROKEN INTO RACE, CITY, AND DISABILITY CATEGORIES. THERE ARE COMPONENTS OF THE PERFORMANCE DATA THAT ARE QUITE INTRIGUING.

WHILE IT MAY BE OBVIOUS TO YOU, IT WAS STRIKING FOR ME TO SEE THE LOW READING AND MATH FOR THE SIXTH-GRADERS. I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT IS UNLESS IT IS RELATED TO THE STRESS OF BEGETTING A MIDDLE SCHOOL CAREER. IT IS SO MUCH LOWER.

ANYWAY, IT IS A PLEASURE TO SEE THE STUDENTS DO SO WELL. THE GRADUATION RATE IS GREAT, AND YET IT IS EASY TO LOSE SIGHT OF THE KIDS WHO ARE STRUGGLING IN THE FACE OF SUCH GOOD RESULTS. I HOPE YOU'LL USE THE INFORMATION TO HELP FIGURE OUT HOW TO HELP ALL THE STUDENTS THRIVE. THANK YOU.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL -- GOOCHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL -- DESIGNATED AS ONTRACK AND RANDOLPH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND -- HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS DISTINGUISHED. THERE ARE SOME NOTEWORTHY RESULTS THERE, AS WELL. WHAT WE DON'T HAVE IS HOW DOES THIS COMPARE TO THE REST OF THE SCHOOLS ACROSS VIRGINIA WHICH WOULD GIVE US A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF OUR SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE IN RELATION TO THE REST OF THE STATE. WE DON'T HAVE IT YET. SOMETIMES ON THE ROAD, I LOOK FORWARD TO BRING THIS DATA BACK WHERE WE CAN PUT IT IN GREATER CONTEXT. SO THAT'S ACCREDITATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. AGAIN, UNOFFICIAL AT THIS POINT. SO, NEXT, WE ARE GOING TO DIG INTO STUDENT GROWTH. I MENTIONED TO YOU THAT THE STATE HAS NOT CLARIFIED THEIR DECORATIONS FOR GROWTH. WE AS THE BOARD ARE WELL AWARE THAT WE USED THE MATH ASSESSMENT FOR MORE THAN A DECADE NOW TO MEASURE INDIVIDUAL STUDENT GROWTH. I'VE GONE INTO DETAIL IN THE PAST. I WON'T TONIGHT BUT RECONDITIONING. WE LOOKED AT THE SCORES OUT OF 100. RIGHT. WE ARE KIND OF USED TO THAT. WE WILL GET SCORES HERE IN A FEW MINUTES OUT OF 100. THE MATH ASSESSMENT IS A VERY DIFFERENT ASSESSMENT. IT INDIVIDUALIZE HIS STUDENT GROWTH FOR EVERY TASK -- TEST A HEADACHE THAT IT ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND THROUGH THE NATIONAL NORMING PROCESS SHOULD GET THE DISTRIBUTION CURVE AROUND THE 50TH% AND WE HAVE TO RECONDITION OURSELVES ON WHAT WE LOOK FOR AS STRONG SCORES TO SAY THAT REALLY OUR TARGET IS 50 AND ABOVE WHEN IT COMES TO THE MATH ASSESSMENT.

THIS FIRST CHART SHOWS YOU THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS THAT MET THEIR FALL TO SPRING GROWTH GOAL, AND AS A REMINDER FOR THE PUBLIC, WHEN OUR STUDENTS TAKE THIS ASSESSMENT IN THE FALL, IF THEY'RE NOT A FIRST-TIME TEST TAKER, IT HAS ALL OF THEIR PREVIOUS DATA OPPORTUNITIES TAKING THE TEST ETHICS UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF ESTIMATED THE TEST SO IT'S INDIVIDUAL RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE FOR EVERY SINGLE STUDENT AND THEN IT SETS FOR EVERY INDIVIDUAL STUDENT A GOAL BASED ON THE NATIONAL NORMING PROCESS OF WHAT THEY SHOULD ACHIEVE BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. WHAT IS HER PRESENT IS WHAT PERCENTAGE OF OUR STUDENTS MET OR EXCEEDED THAT FALL GROWTH GOAL. AS WE LOOK AT WHAT MATH WOULD TELL US TO EXPECT AROUND THE 15TH -- 50TH PERCENTILE. WE HIGHLIGHTED THE 50TH PERCENTILE IN PINK. AND YOU CAN SEE OUR RESULTS WITH VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS ARE REALLY STRONG AND WHAT MAP WITH TELUS IS ANYTHING ABOVE THAT 60% MARK IS UNUSUAL. WE ARE PROUD OF THESE GROWTH RESULTS IN READING. THAT OUTLIER IN SIXTH GRADE I TALKED AT LENGTH WITH BOARD MEMBERS. WE TALKED BEFORE PUBLICLY ABOUT THE TRANSITION FROM 5TH TO 6TH GRADE, BEING IN LARGE PART BASED ON THE TEST CHANGING. FIFTH-GRADERS THAT GET THROUGH ALL OF THIS IS GREAT CONTENT AND TAKE THAT SIXTH GRADE SOL TEST. AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL QUESTION THEY'RE GOING TO SEE ANNETTE TEST IS THE SEVENTH GRADE. THEIR SCORES ARE GOING TO BE SUPERHIGH, BUT WHEN THEY GET THAT SIXTH GRADE TEST PICKS THEM UP AT THAT SUPER HIGH POINT, THEY ARE THEN LIKELY TO SEE QUESTIONS THAT ARE HIGH SCHOOL CONTENT QUESTIONS THAT THEY HAVE NEVER RECEIVED INSTRUCTION BEFORE. SO THE WORD THAT THE MATH FOLKS HAVE ENCOURAGED US TO USE IS A RECALIBRATION IN SIXTH GRADE BECAUSE OF THAT CHANGE FROM THE 25 TEST TO THE 6+ TEST, AND WE SEE THAT BOTH IN READING AND IN MATH. AND YOU WILL SEE IN A SECOND THE CORRELATION OR LACK THEREOF TO OVERALL PERFORMANCE IN TERMS OF ACHIEVEMENT. SOME REALLY STRONG SIXTH GRADE ACHIEVEMENT RESULTS IN SOME AREAS. THAT MAKE YOU SCRATCH YOUR HEAD ABOUT THE 47% IN TERMS OF MAP. THAT'S A BRIEF EXPLANATION FOR WHY DOES THAT SIXTH GRADE NUMBER LOOK SO DIFFERENT AND AGAIN, THIS IS FOR READING FOR LAST YEAR, FALL TO SPRING GROWTH GOALS FOR STUDENTS. THERE'S PROBABLY SOME REASON TO BE CONCERNED BUT I NEVER FROM LAST YEAR AND I WILL ALSO SAY, A LOT OF THOSE STUDENTS IN THE EARLY GRADES ARE FIGURING OUT HOW TO TAKE THE MAP TEST SO WE CONTINUE TO FOR THE SECOND GRADE RESULTS. AND IT'S ALSO A FUNCTION OF THEIR OUR STUDENTS STRUGGLING WITH READING. IT IS VERY MUCH A READING TEST. A LOT TO BE PROUD OF AND A LOT OF REALLY STRONG RESULTS AND THEN SOME AREAS WE WANT TO UNPACK A LITTLE BIT MORE. YOU CAN SEE OUR ANNUAL PERCENTAGE OF SCHOOLS WHO MET OR EXCEEDED THE PROJECTED GROWTH GOAL IN MATH AND READING OVER TIME AND YOU CAN SEE THE SIGNIFICANT DID THAT'S VERY EVIDENT THEY'RE COMING OUT OF A DISRUPTION OF THE PANDEMIC AND THEN OUR CURRENT RESULTS AND HOW THEY STACK UP LONGITUDINALLY TO PREVIOUS YEARS RESULTS. I THINK IDEALLY WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE 60 AND ABOVE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS AND THAT IS CERTAINLY OUR GOAL. BUT IN TERMS OF POSITIVE RESPONSES SLIGHTLY AGREE, AGREE CATEGORY, WE PRESENTED IN THE PAST IS HOW THOSE THREE COMBINED HISTORICALLY IN 783% OF OUR RESPONDENTS CHOSE A RESPONSE IN ONE OF THOSE THREE AREAS, WHICH

IS A 4% INCREASE OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. IT IS ALSO THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE WE HAD SINCE WE STARTED ADMINISTERING THE SURVEY BACK IN 2021. SO, WORK TO DO, ABSOLUTELY, BUT GREAT TO SEE THOSE NUMBERS TRENDING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. I THINK ABOUT MR. FARKUS'S PRESENTATION EARLIER. AND OBVIOUSLY, ANNA, OUR FOCUS IS WHEN YOU SEE RESULTS LIKE THIS, HOW ABOUT THE 20% THAT DON'T FEEL CONNECTED TO AN ADULT AT SCHOOL. THAT DRIVES A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS AROUND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING WITH -- WITHIN CLASSROOMS -- EXTRACURRICULAR, CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. NOT AN UPTICK BUT NOT GOING THE WRONG DIRECTION, AND OBVIOUSLY, AS WE GO UP INTO THE 90S, IT BECOMES MORE AND MORE CHALLENGING TO CONTINUE TO INCREASE THAT NUMBER, BUT AGAIN, IT DRIVES OUR WORK, AND REALLY, OUR PRIORITIES IN TERMS OF PROGRAM PLANNING FOR STUDENTS.

THE VIRGINIA RETIREMENT SYSTEM DOESN'T ALLOW FOR PAYMENTS INTO RETIREMENT BENEFITS WHEN THIS SAID PERSON IS NO LONGER EMPLOYED BY THE DIVISION, AND SO TO MAKE THE FORMER SUPERINTENDENT WHOLE, THIS ÷÷REPRESENTS THE DOLLAR VALUE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN PART OF HIS RETIREMENT BENEFITS. ROBINSON ALLUDED TO, AND THEN IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTY ÷÷RIGHT NOW, AND I WILL TELL YOU THAT WE ARE SITTING, AND I KNOW THIS MIGHT NOT JIVE PERFECTLY WITH THE LINK YOU HAVE THERE BECAUSE THAT'S UPDATED ON A DIFFERENT PACE, BUT I'VE CHECKED WITH SEAN CAMPBELL ABOUT THIS, AND IN OUR REPORT AS OF SEPTEMBER 30TH, WE HAVE 2,690 STUDENTS, PRE- K THROUGH 12 IN THE SCHOOL DERISION AND THAT REPRESENTS AN INCREASE OF 47 STUDENTS FROM LAST YEAR AND IT'S ALSO NOTABLE THAT 25 OF THOSE 47 STUDENTS ARE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES. I SAY THAT BECAUSE WE FIND THAT TYPICALLY CAN INVOLVE ADDITIONAL STAFFING, ADDITIONAL

WE HAD OVER 200 ATTEND, BUT MY SHOUTOUT IS TO OUR SUPERINTENDENT FOR GIVING AN OUTSTANDING PRESENTATION OF WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY, AND I DON'T EVER SAY MUCH MORE THAN IF UNLESS I HEAR FROM MORE THAN FIVE PEOPLE, BUT THIS WAS MANY MORE PEOPLE WHO JUST WERE ABSOLUTELY THRILLED WITH YOUR PRESENTATION THAT EVENING, WHICH WAS FOLLOWED BY, AGAIN, OUR SUPERINTENDENT GIVING AN OUTSTANDING REPRESENT TO THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND SCHOOL BOARD FOR DISTRICTS 1 THROUGH 5, AND THAT JUST REALLY MEANS A LOT, AND IT IS MUCH APPRECIATED I'M SURE BY ALL THE BOARD.

AGAIN TO OUR SUPERINTENDENT, I'M ON THREE BOARDS, ONE WITH BLUE RIDGE AND IT'S NICE FOR A CHANGE TO HAVE OUR SUPERINTENDENT GO -- OR ATTEND WITH ME TO THAT MEETING.

THAT BOARD HAS A FULL CURRICULUM, GREAT FIELD TRIPS PLANNED FOR THEIR STUDENTS, AND IT'S JUST REALLY GOING GUNG HO. CEAC WAS AN OUTSTANDING MEETING.

I'M SORRY MS. MURRAY LEFT. SHE HAD ONE OF THE FIRST IN-PERSON MEETINGS AND WE HAD OVER 20-PLUS.

WE HAD ONLINE PEOPLE, AND THE OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES TO BE INVOLVED, SHE DOES A FABULOUS JOB IN KEEPING THEM UP TO DATE AND GIVING THEM OPPORTUNITIES, AND SHE HAS A GREAT YEAR PLANNED AHEAD FOR THEM.

ONE OF THEIR CONCERNS, AGAIN, WAS GEF, WHICH I AM ALSO ON THAT BOARD, BUT THEY ARE GOING FULL FORCE WITH THEIR AFTER- SCHOOL PROGRAM, AND IT WAS MENTIONED AT THAT MEETING THAT THEY HOPE TO LOOK FORWARD TO HAVING MORE SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENTS BE A PART OF THAT PROGRAM OF WHICH NOW, AGAIN, AS WAS MENTIONED BEFORE, ÷÷STAFF IS DIFFICULT, BUT AT LEAST IT'S ON EVERYBODY'S PLATE, AND AS WE MOVE TOWARDS THE NEW YEAR AND OBVIOUSLY TO THE SUMMER, WE HOPE THESE STUDENTS WILL BE INCLUDED.

THE UPCOMING DINNER THAT IS COMING UP IN THE END OF THE MONTH, I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT ATTENDING.

IT'S THE SOIL CONSERVATION DINNER, AND AFTER HAVING A VERY LENGTHY CONVERSATION WITH THE PALLATIN DISTRICT, THEY'RE DOING A FABULOUS JOB IN OUR SCHOOLS ÷÷WITH THE S.T.E.M.
